LIFE project
We will implement the project in selected parts of the Skalky u Sedlec Nature Reserve, where the subject of protection is thermophilic, steppe vegetation with the occurrence of endangered species of plants and animals, including: military orchid, soft blueflower, Thessalian tolice, spring headwort and, last but not least, blackthorn.
Currently, the area is formed by a mosaic of open grasslands and shrubs. The relatively rapid expansion of shrubs is taking away the space of steppe formations. The shrubs are expanding into the area and are often very impermeable. The expansion can lead to the closure of larger parts within a few years, which can endanger rare species of plants, animals and the biotopes themselves that form the sub-Pannonian steppe grasslands. A major problem arises in the case of a possible reduction in the population of the blackthorn, which requires a specific mosaic of semi-natural dry grasslands and shrub facies from the Rosaceae family. The originally scattered shrubs and solitary individuals have in places become compact thickets with overgrowing shrubs and trees. The occurrence of the glandular ragwort, which is spreading in the locality, is also important. Currently, there are more than two larger outbreaks, including local occurrences.
The aim of the project is to improve habitat conditions, which are overgrown with woody vegetation, expand steppe biotopes, restore the original character of the site and create living spaces for the blackthorn beetle. The project will also involve the elimination of invasive plants, especially the glandular sedge, which is starting to spread in the site.
A total of 11.82 ha will be restored, which is 21% of the total area of the natural monument (57.17 ha).
