Status of protected drylands

grasslands and forest-steppe on

South Moravia and the Elbe region

will help improve

LIFE project

The project "Protection of Priority Grassland Habitats of the South Moravian Region", LIFE SouthMoravia for short, is funded by the LIFE programme of the European Union with the support of the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic. It started in September 2019 and will run until December 2025.

Grassland and forest-steppe habitats suffer from overgrowth by invasive plant species, often due to land abandonment or inappropriate management. The main objective of the project is to develop a comprehensive management system using traditional agricultural practices. The main activities include the restoration of degraded grasslands (removal of bushes and overgrowth, mowing in a mosaic manner, illuminating habitats and connecting pastures), restoring grazing as a method of long-term management and eliminating invasive plants. The project also includes building a functional volunteer base that will ensure the long-term sustainability of the results. The project's task is to improve the state of nature conservation in six South Moravian sites of European importance (SEI) – Děvín, Stolová hora, Moravian Karst, Miroslavské kopce, Pouzdřanská steppe – Kolby, Stránská skála, and one site in Central Bohemia – Žehuňsko (the photo above shows a spring adonis - Adonis vernalis - from this site), see the Project area tab.
